The reason for the decrease in sealing performance of O-ring seals

2024 12/28

What causes water and oil leakage during the use of O-ring seals? Many people have doubts about this. The decrease in sealing performance of seals is caused by both internal and external factors. Below is a detailed analysis.

1. Movement speed

When the movement speed is very low, it is necessary to consider whether there is a "crawling" phenomenon in the stability of equipment operation. When the motion speed is high, the oil film acting as a slide valve is prone to damage, and the O-ring seal cannot receive good lubrication, resulting in increased friction and decreased sealing performance.

2. Hydraulic impact
In many cases, it will be subjected to hydraulic shock, and the high pressure generated instantly during hydraulic shock will be many times greater than the working pressure of the system. Under high pressure, the oil seal is easily torn or partially injected into the gap, resulting in a shortened service life of the O-ring seal.

3. Lateral load
Generally speaking, there is a support ring on the piston. The support ring can ensure that the oil cylinder can withstand a large load, but the O-ring itself cannot play a load role. For hydraulic cylinders with lateral force, support rings must be installed. If there is no support ring, it is easy to cause the oil seal to wear and leak oil in an eccentric state.

4. Working medium
The working medium has a significant impact on the use of O-ring seals. If unqualified working media are used, it is easy to cause the sealing performance of the O-ring to deteriorate. In addition, if the working medium is not cleaned thoroughly during long-term use, dirt can stimulate the O-ring seal for a long time, leading to accelerated wear and aging, and deteriorating sealing performance.
